Serena accepted the Lord during Vacation Bible School at the age of 5. Since her family didn’t attend church, she didn’t really grow in the Lord until high school when she started attending the church that her husband’s father was pastoring. At that time two major things happened in her life: she was exposed to missions and was sanctified. After marrying Mark, who also had a call to the mission field, they worked at WGM’s headquarters in Marion, Indiana until Serena finished her degree in education.
In 1989 they headed to Honduras where they served twenty-three years and raised their three children. In 2013, they relocated to Mexico and served there until last year. Life on the mission field has never been boring! While there, Serena did everything from putting out forest fires, to serving as the principal of the high school, from teaching Bible studies, to delivering pigs, from writing Sunday school manuals to developing and administrating a theological education by extension program in Northern Mexico.
Currently, Serena serves as the Area Team Leader of Mexico, Assistant Regional Director of the Americas for World Gospel Mission, teaches Bible studies, is the mother of three, and the grandmother of three. Since September 2025 she and Mark have been residing in Portland, Oregon to be closer to aging parents and family.
Serena and Mark’s theme verse is 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” Serena’s greatest joy is seeing others grow in Jesus.
